WOMAN might be moving to Mount Isa because of mayor John Molony’s “beauty disadvantaged” comments, but if anything, they are relocating for the town’s excellent career opportunities.
Courtney Kuhl shifted to Mount Isa four months ago to take up a managerial position at EB, a video games retail outlet in Simpson Street Plaza.
Yesterday she was at the airport to catch a plane to the Gold Coast, where she has an important work conference, but said she would be definitely coming back to the place she now calls home.
“It’s been a really good opportunity for me coming here,” she said.
When asked whether being a female in a managerial position was detrimental or beneficial in Mount Isa, Courtney said it had its pros and cons.
“As a female it can be easier to sell things, but a lot of guys will also think that because I’m a chick I don’t know what I’m talking about,” she said.
But business is booming, and although Courtney is too modest to take the credit, the people around her say she has worked hard to get the store up and running.
As for the men in town, Courtney said she was currently single and fancy free after leaving her boyfriend behind in Townsville.
But looking for love is certainly not the number one item on her agenda.
“I’ve met a few nice guys but haven’t really been looking,” she said.
Like Courtney, 20-year-old stripper ‘Miss Alisha’ has also come to Mount Isa for work.
Having grown up on the Sunshine Coast, Alisha came to North West Queensland because of the good money offered by working at The Club.
While she said being a single woman in Mount Isa had its bonuses because she could “pick and choose” the men she wanted to date, she said the selection was pretty slim.
“A lot of the men are bogans. They need to shave and clean themselves up a bit,” she said.
“There’s one girl to every five guys or something like that, which is good if you’re a girl, but the blokes here aren’t as good as the ones back home.”
